The Earth’s major and minor tectonic plates are not always visible on large scale maps, with minor plates being less than 20 million square kilometers in area but larger than one million square kilometers.

The movement of these plates, which cover the Earth’s lithosphere, is responsible for the break up of the supercontinent Pangea and the formation of the Atlantic Ocean.

These plates are composed of both oceanic and continental crust.
