IBM and NASA have collaborated to develop a new AI foundation model for weather and climate, which will be applied to climate efforts such as analysis of urban heat islands in the UAE, reforestation in Kenya, and climate resilience in the UK.

The models, trained on geospatial information such as satellite images, aim to improve the accuracy, speed, and affordability of weather forecasting and other climate applications.

This initiative is part of IBM’s ongoing strategy to advance its AI model strategy, which includes the creation, training, fine-tuning, and open-sourcing of foundation models.
