Massive earthquake shifts land in Japan
09 January 2024
A series of powerful earthquakes in western Japan on January 1 resulted in at least 55 deaths and extensive damage to buildings, vehicles, and boats.
The initial magnitude 7.6 earthquake, which continued to cause aftershocks, may have shifted land in the Noto region, leading to tsunami waves of about 80cm in height.
Satellite images taken after the earthquake suggest the biggest shift was in Wajima City, where the observation point moved about 1.3 meters west.
