A new building classification model, using OpenStreetMap building data, is being developed to estimate the risk of earthquakes on the built environment, providing more accurate information on damage.

The model, which is currently available in South America, Africa, and Europe, is supported by the OpenStreetMap community in providing detailed footprints, occupancy, or 3D information.

The model aims to fill a knowledge gap in earthquake risk estimation, and its implementation is being tested following recent earthquakes in Japan and Indonesia.
