Trimble Navigation, which started with the production of Loran receivers, was looking for a new marine project when HP cancelled its GPS project.

With the encouragement of Brad Parkinson, the company decided to buy the canceled project.

GPS, which began as a real-time worldwide system for navigation, was licensed to Pioneer for the Japanese car navigation market in 1986, despite budget problems in Washington that threatened its completion.
